The official MOT record, explained

Where the information comes from

MOT test records are published from the official MOT database, the same source used for official MOT history checks in Northern Ireland. When you enter a registration number, MOT Atlas asks that source for the current record and shows you what comes back, at that moment.

What an MOT record contains

For each MOT test the database holds:

• the date the test was carried out;
• whether the vehicle passed or failed;
• the odometer reading at the time of the test;
• the expiry date of the new MOT certificate, where one was issued;
• the test number, and the location where it was recorded;
• any defects or advisories raised during the test.

How far back the records go

For cars, motorcycles and vans, records are available for tests carried out since 2005. For HGVs, trailers, buses and coaches, records start from 2018. Tests carried out before those dates are not held in the database, so they will not appear here even for a well maintained vehicle.

What this site does not tell you

An MOT record is not a full vehicle history. It does not show accident damage, outstanding finance, mileage corrections made elsewhere, or whether a vehicle has been written off. A valid MOT means the vehicle met the minimum safety and environmental standards on the day of the test – it is not a guarantee of the vehicle's condition today.
