Where this information comes from
MOT test records are taken live from the official MOT database, the same source used for official MOT history checks in Northern Ireland. Results for cars, motorcycles and vans start from 2005, and for HGVs, trailers, buses and coaches from 2018.
Common questions
Before you check a vehicle
Is this the same information as the official MOT record?
Yes. The test results, mileages and expiry dates shown here are read directly from the official MOT database, so they match the current record for that vehicle. MOT Atlas only changes how the record is presented.
How far back do the records go?
For cars, motorcycles and vans you can see tests carried out since 2005. For HGVs, trailers, buses and coaches, records start from 2018. Older tests are not held in the database.
What does it mean if a vehicle has no MOT history?
It usually means the vehicle has not had an MOT recorded yet, or the registration number was entered incorrectly. Check the plate and try again. A vehicle used only on private land, or one that is MOT exempt, may also have no record.
Can I see where each test was carried out?
Where the record includes a test location, it is shown with the test. Location, defect and advisory information is available for tests carried out in Northern Ireland.
Something looks wrong with a record. What can I do?
You can contact us with the registration number and a description of the problem. Corrections to an MOT record itself have to be made by the testing garage or the issuing authority.
